I was $70,000 in the hole…
A few years ago I was $70,000 in debt (and counting) with no job and no business plan.
I had a wife and four kids. And all the usual bills that come with it. I had completely blown through all our cash ($40K). I was paying my all my bills on credit cards and a line of credit. Several of my cards were maxed out. And the creditors were calling.
I had no idea how I would ever get out of the hole I was in.
I prayed a lot. I was at the end of my rope. Humiliated. Scared.
I would ride around in my car listening to Dan Kennedy tapes. Trying to get some idea of what I wanted to do with my life.
Misery loves company, right? How true it is! I remember listening to a talk by Jeff Paul. I know it’s sick, but I found great comfort listening to all his failures. I particularly liked to hear him talk about living in his sister’s basement with his family. And how his entire family thought he was nuts for trying to be an entrepreneur. I could relate.
I would watch one of the most depressing shows on TV: Intervention. If you haven’t seen this show, it’s basically about junkies who are strung out on drugs. Their families are trying to save their life by having an intervention and getting them to go to rehab. I found comfort in watching and thinking, “Well, at least my life isn’t that bad!”
I drank too much. I ate too much. I didn’t exercise. I was 50 pounds overweight. I was just freaking miserable.
And most of all… I was defeated. Especially, in the battleground between my ears.
I had lost the most important success factor of all… CONFIDENCE.
On a scale of 1 to 10 my confidence was about a minus five.
So, I gave up on my dream of working for myself. And I started looking for a job. I went to a job placement firm. They were optimistic that they could easily find me a job. I was THRILLED! I came home and told me wife. She listened quietly. And said…
“Why do you want to get a job?”
I was STUNNED.
I was like, “Hey! If you haven’t noticed were about 30 days from living in a cardboard box on the side of the road! We’re freakin’ broke.”
“If you get a job, you’ll be even more miserable than you are right now. And you’ll make me miserable too. You’ve always hated working for someone else. Pull yourself to together and figure out how to get us out of this hole. I believe in you.”
That, my friend, was LIFE CHANGING.
I thought, “Dang, if my wife hasn’t given up on me, then I guess I still have a chance.”
So, I took IMMEDIATE action.
I bought a $1000 Internet marketing course (John Reeses’ Traffic Secrets) with money I didn’t have. I devoured it. And most importantly, I took action! Here’s what I did…
I set up the ugliest web page in the history of the Internet (seriously). I took out my credit card and bought some ads from this company called, “Google.” (You may have heard about them). I got some leads and I made an offer for a product.
And you know what happened?
I got ONE sale.
But that one sale changed my life forever! Because once I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, I just kept fighting and clawing my way out. And little by little I got out of the hole.
Now, it hasn’t been exactly a yellow-brick-road ever since that day. But, I have had some huge successes online.
The point is, no matter where you are in your life right now, you’ve got to keep believing that things can get better. Don’t ever give up on yourself. To quote Winston Churchill… “Never give in! Never, never, never give in!”
I’m personally convinced that many people fail in business because they simply give up to easily. I know that sounds simplistic. But the truth is, every successful business person I know has had many failures. That’s the nature of business. It’s just part of being human!
So, if you’re in a hole just look up. There really is a ray of light there. And yes, you really can dig yourself out. But brace yourself. Because it may take some serious effort and sacrifice. But in the end it will be well worth it.

Dan, I don’t always open the emails that I get from you, (no time, too many, etc.) but this one seemed relatable. Thanks for your honesty and your candidness about this topic. I have forwarded this to others because I think your message was great and inspiring…it was definitely good timing for me to hear! I have enjoyed your guitar tips and actually save all of them, but have not gotten around to actually opening all of them up. I wish you great success in 2010 and thanks again for such a timely message! Mahalo!
Well Dan, what can I say?
I’m not in debt as you were; I’m not a few degrees separated from moving my family into a cardboard box but my confidence is being extremely challenged.
I am nearly 50 years young and due to neurological disability that came knocking … well I feel a whole lot less positive about myself and have been pensioned off. Wow! $700 a month doesn’t help very much when you have one daughter heading to university and one just around the corner from there.
Like you I have people counting on me and I can’t — no won’t — let them down. Your story is inspirational. I came to learn about you through Amazing Guitar Secrets — though physically challenged to play, I use guitar as a physical therapy — and am impressed with your online presence.
I can relate to you as a musician and a person.
Thanks for your story.
Thanks Dan – for everything. Not just your story, but as you pulled out of this you developed the greatest product for guitarists available – period. Knowing your story gives hope to myself and many others like me. Personally I went from being a corporate accountant with a huge international corporation to total disability almost overnight. Wages as an accountant provided an incredible life style. Disability from Social Security doesn’t. Deep in debt, I’m still pulling myself out. But with the same grit you have, I’ve have a great friend (14 yr old actor, director and producer). Together we are pursuing a collaborative writing effort of a screenplay for a feature film. We are doing it all ourselves from creative idea to distribution. I need his knowledge and he needs my experience (this is my 9th screenplay) This isn’t a low budget film – it’s basically a NO budget film, but we have a plan and determination, faith in God and now your testimony.
Thanks Dan – you’re the greatest.
In 1992 my company was liquidated and I was seqestrated the same year. I had lost everything and I had a wife and 2 school children to look after. I realized then that when you are on the bottom there is only one way and that is up. It is now 2010 and I am now a millionaire and thanks to my wife who stood by me all the years and a lot of hard work and mostly believing in ones self and having the wonderful support of my wife.
Daniel your wife is amazing. She never gave up on you, that’s a team. I hope someday I may have the privilege to meet both of you too. Winston Churchill was the man that saved all of us and united us together. Never giving up is the key to success. I know this more now then ever. My story is quite sad and depressing but, I wont make you cry or shed a tear today. I know the KING of KINGS is carrying me every day. I am working on your e-mails and I have been looking at many web sites. Your site is one of a few that is truthful reputable genuine and has integrity. I will be in touch soon. Andrew
hi, i, too, am also deep in trouble $$… and debt. your story is inspiring, of course, and i am also trying to believe that there can be light at the end of the tunnel. finding low/no-cost ops that are non-scam and honest, as well as have some sort of a support system, is also quite the challenge. i think that many are selling ops over the net with no real first-hand knowledge of the product itself, which is really sad… and scary. thanks. bb.
I believe that you took control and drove out all of your negativity in your life, which then opened you up for several windows of opportunity . You took it and ran with it! great job and success! I am flat broke but I claim I will not stay this way! i will make it and make more money than ever. I do not know how yet,but I will!! Your life story just made me pick up my chin,so I thank you. I am 55 years old. I never thought this could happen to me! I will succeed thanks to your story! THANK YOU!!
I’m really sorry to hear about what you went through. I can’t really say that I can relate to that but I’m glad things are working out better for you now.
Great story—find myself in the same place right now but hope to have your results in the next 6-12 months.
what if you really need something like this to start making money as quick as the end of this month, but because your husband was the only one
working and he decided he wanted a divorce and left and when he did you were left with no money at all, just the house to pay for , the bils to pay for and no money to do it with, and there are no places hiring and the ones that are won’t hire you because they want younger people, see i am 54 years old, all i have been my married life is a house wife, haven’t worked outside the home for years.now i am looking for a way to make money from home so i can keep the house and pay the bills and put food on the table , i also have a grandson who lives with me that i support and take care jof.
so how do i get this when i can’t even pay my electric bill right now, i need to start something first then send the money in after i make the money. i am in a desperate situation, what do i do, let everything get turned off, let the bank take my home and my grandsons home, live on the streets and have him in foster care, is that the answer?? or is there some one out there that really cares about helping some one like us make money so we can live a better life?? I am not asking to make thousands a week, just enough to live on a month. thank-you
Daniel,
My wife was not of the same caliber as yours. She criticized every move I made trying to be my own boss. Our divorce is almost final now and, due to a bad surgery that left me with a paralyzed leg, I have to find a source of income. The judge, in his infinite wisdom, gave her $1580 of my $2095 disability check. I am homeless and living in an RV. I don’t know where my next meal is coming from and yet, I have a tremendous peace about the future. I will find something and it WILL work! Thanks for the encouragement!
Bob
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for sharing. I encountered a Misfortune in my Life too.
I’m feeling the pain right now. I wished that I can make money
in Internet Marketing. I’m serious, willing to work hard and
determined to be successful. My weaknesses are: I’m limited in
Computer skills and writing Articles is not a piece of cake for me.
I had to spend a lot of brain power, (so tiring for me) and lots of
time to produce one. I can not write something if I have limited info
on it. Then, there is no assurance that it will be picked.
Also, my monthly expenses are greater than my income because of what
happened to me. I was scammed.
Are there ways that I can be successful in Internet Marketing in spite of my weaknesses?
If so, would you personally help me?
Congratulations on your success!
Sincerely, Advoquita (Kate Stude)
Daniel,
What a story you have shared with all of us. It is inspiring. I am not in a really bad spot myself. I quit a job two months ago making good money because I was tired of being controlled by a perfectionist. I worked as an inside sales person and loved the contact with my customers. Once again, thank you for sharing your story. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
Iam glad I happened upon your website. My misfortunes are different from yours;however,Am looking up and forward to purchasing your learning how to market on the internet in three months.I was scammed in Feb. Iam going to come back from learning what that experence had to teach me.I will pick-up my courage and start over again I like the way your brain works.Yes,Iam still realing from the blow that was dealt me last month.Am a determined individual who will be very driven to succeed.Thank You For Your Time,Patti Clay
Dan there are a couple of things about your story that I want to touch on. First you HAD $1,000 dollars to take a chance with. I haven’t seen anywhere on the Internet where a merchant will send you something before you pay for it. So you were blessed in that regard. Second you got some leads. How? I think that is a question most people on the Internet have when they pursue starting an Internet business. You probably already know traffic is how you make money on the Internet. And third was you web page a hosted page. That costs money and if you don’t have 50 or 100 or more dollars you’re stuck. Your story is one of accomplishment and it is inspiring but I have read stories similiar to yours and EVERY single one of them the person ALWAYS had an edge, be it a friend or someone took an interest in them and helped them or they had money they took a chance on. People need money to survive. Most only need enough to pay the bills. There’s tons of competition on the Internet and not all are honest. Think how wonderful it would be if one of these Internet millionaires decided to take a handful of people and train them for FREE! Ouch! that ’s a bad word now-a-days. But someone who has made millions and knows how to make millions, to take time out and help others, I think GOD would take a hammer and some nails and start to perpare a chair for that person in heaven. ALL and I mean ALL Internet millionaires say once you start making money on the Internet you’re in “auto-pilot” and the money just swarms in. If that’s the case why can’t they help someone achieve when THEIR money flows steadily? It’s on auto-pilot right? They’re still making money. Once again your story is inspiring and GOD blessed you. I hope and pray he continues to bless you and your family.
I agree with Will (last commentator)
Everyone who says they succeeded, always had some money to take a chance with. I wish there was some one who could represent how some one could make a quick modest income, with a small start up fee. This would allow that person to use that income to generate more and more income. I used to be a manager at a store. At that store I made the people I managed successful. I walked them through. If any one only had the desire to work, I could make them successful, by sheer demonstration of how to proceed. I made it simple. I could guarantee their success. If the student didn’t learn, the teacher didn’t teach. I’m also so tired of all the hype, (really haven’t listened to all you have had to say yet) you can make $$$ with my instruction, then you buy it and there is a thousand of hours of instruction, and soooo much money to be shelled out additionally before any one can realize success. None of this is ever mentioned before the purchase. Still you look to be sincere, so I am going to put more time if I can into listening to you.
I connected with some company here and I feel like I have been scamped, iam in debt now and it’s going to take some time to get out of it but I’ll make it out somehow,i’ll never believe any thing on the internet about selling anything ever again
All of this selling on line is a joke and people should be wiped for the lies that are told.
Dan first of all I gotta say that truly is an inspiring story, and you are very blessed. However, there are many of us really struggling on how we’ll manage to pay bill’s or provide groceries, or etc… You see I kinda agree with Will on some points he made like, first Dan at least you had a 1000.00 dollars to purchase a course with. Please understand that I’m currently unemployed with no money and quite frustrated, but I wish that someone that’s comfortable with money would HELP someone like myself to actually get started making real money as soon as possible. Because, once I’m back on my feet again I would really like to help others prosper as well.It would truly be nice to not have these money problems that I face every single day.Dan I just need some help…David,

Dear Dan, I read your story. I rate it highly and would like to let you know my principle has been never to give up nor once convinced allow another to change my mind. I don’t beileve everything people say but your talk about making money on the internet held my attention not because I am attempting to make money but because you appear to have a method. Talk will never win me. I’m a writer I know about the power of words first hand. As a matter of fact I am a millionaire. I know Millions of words. It’s the details and the approach that motivates my interest. Now I’m interested in your system if I can afford it. You had a wife that had faith in you. I am alone without anyone to even give me a moral boost but I’m ready to fight.
HI…
